Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.

Human rights activist Julie Bindel wrote a guide to help journalists cover stories on prostitution and human trafficking with sensitivity and ethics. The same care should be taken when writing stories about the survivors of polygamy and other high-demand groups (cults.)

When referring to polygamy on this site, it is referring to coerced religious polygamy, or patriarchal polygamy.  It is NOT referring to situations of polyamory, swingers, free love, open-relationships, or any other situation where people with multiple partners are all united in a loving, abuse-free relationship.  Religious polygamy is inherently coercive.  If you believe you must live it.  To not live it – is to be damned.

Who would choose to be damned for time and all eternity?

Polygamy is a tool  for predators to “legally” exploit, manipulate and enslave people.  Spiritual advisors, cult leaders, religious leaders or clergy of any sort NOT involved in polygamy can also use deceptive and/or coercive practices to manipulate their followers to achieve slave-like obedience – thereby gaining access to their bodies, resources,  and labor. Such ecclesiastical exploitation can result in human trafficking and is a violation of human rights.

The purpose of this blog is to be an information center representing the overlooked relationship between polygamy and human trafficking. There is a broad misunderstanding that if someone over 18 is exploited in the name of religion, then there is no legal recourse. This myth has resulted in -

A. An increase in the number of savvy predators who thrive by violating the human rights of true believers.

B. An explosion in the wealth of the leaders of criminal organizations who then become even more powerful.

C. An unconscionable increase in human suffering and the devastation of many lives.
